Matala, Heraklion, Greece
A 35 minutes drive.
Matala is a well known lively town with a big sandy beach. In the sixties of the past century hippies used to live in the Ancient Minoan caves for a couple of years until they got kicked out. Some of them moved to Agia Galini… Local George made a welcoming painting on the harbour wall as a tribute. Every year in June there is a big hippie pop festival. Life is today, tomorrow never comes…
Just before you enter the village on your left hand, there is a path to the famous Red Beach. It’s a good 20 minutes walk, going up and down the limestone hill. On the beach is a wooden snack shack but it’s not always open. Be sure to have plenty of water!
